Rumba at Brasil Brasil Cultural Center

I shot this short video in February 2012. It’s the first rumba event that I attended. I loved it and want to learn some rumba. I love the playfulness, theatricalities, and rhythms of this dance.  I love that it’s done to live drumming also. It’s all about the guy trying to get the woman’s chastity will she teases. She has to respond to his movements and not get “caught” by his symbolic sexual essence.

This is an Afro-Cuban dance.  Often, in Rueda or Casino style (Cuban Salsa), rumba is done as “freestyle movements” when the leader lets go of his follower in the dance.
